• Green Schools Flag

  • Green Schools is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and recognises whole school action for the environment.

Kilmainhamwood National School has been involved in the Green School Programme for over a number of years.

We have been awarded THREE flags on the following themes:

    1. Litter & Waste
    2. Energy
    3. Water

Each flag takes approximately 2 years to complete and this year we are currently working on our Travel flag. The theme of travel aims to increase the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, and car-pooling to and from school.

    Meet the Committee 2020/2021

The Travel Flag Committee is made up of 2-3 pupils from 1st Class to Sixth Class.

    Travel Survey

We started off the theme of Travel by creating a survey based on how children come to school each day. We will use this as a starting point and hope to redo this survey in year 2 to see if there are any changes. Please see image below of the results of our survey.

We redid this survey in October 2020 and we created a graph to show the results.

    Poster Competition

In October 2020 we held a poster competition to promote an awareness of Travel in our school. The winners of this competition were Caitlín Gilsenan (Senior Infants), Jessica Gillespie (1st Class), James Byrne (2nd Class), Ellen (3rd Class), Harriet Howden (5th Class), Shannon-Ruby Russell (6th Class), Alanna Rogers (6th Class). Congratulations!

Green School Conference – November 2020

In November 2020, classes from 2nd to 6th took part in the first ever Green School Conference. They completed activities on what make cities sustainable. Take a look at some snaps from the 6th Class room.

    Litter & Waste Officers

All children in school are encouraged to keep the playground tidy and neat. Our Litter & Waste Officers are keeping our school playground litter free as they monitor the yard. Ronan, Hannah and Kaelan have taken on this role this year.

    Kilmainhamwood’s Green School Code

Our Green School code was created by our talented pupils. Children were asked to make up a code for our Litter & Waste theme, Energy theme and Water theme. We will be adding to our code for our Travel theme next.

    Don’t be a Zero

Be a Litter and Waste Hero!

    Turn out the Light

Before Glug the Energy Bug Bites!

    Don’t Slip, Stop the Drip!
